Changes from medieval to renaissance art.
Architecture
The
medieval emphasis on architecture was on vertical buildings, which pointed
towards God and Heaven. Renaissance
buildings were horizontal and hugged the ground. Antique methods of building were rediscovered
which had not been used during the middle ages.
Sculpture
Medieval
sculptors were statues of the saints that were unrealistic and symbolic. Renaissance sculptors studied many antique statues
and celebrated the human form for its own sake (humanism).
Painting
The
gold backgrounds of medieval paintings were replaced during the
renaissance. Painting represented the
real three-dimensional world with perfectly proportioned human figures.
